Whapmagoostui, Qc – December 13, 2024 – Members of the Eeyou Eenou Police Force of the Whapmagoostui detachment along with the Nunavik Police Service responded to a call in the early morning of December 7th, 2024 regarding an armed individual.
The EEPF Call Dispatch Center received a call that shots had been fired inside a house. The suspect had left the scene and the officers were able to locate the individual at another address where he was taken into custody.
Simon KAWAPIT Jr (28) was detained and released with bail and is facing charges of: discharging firearm – recklessness; assault; assault with a weapon; using a firearm in the commission of offence; careless use of a firearm.
We would like to remind all communities and its members to safely store all firearms and ammunition. If you don’t have any trigger locks or gun cabinets, please refrain from keeping your firearms easily accessible in your homes.
Anyone charged with a firearm offense, in most cases, will have a restriction to possess or own a firearm for a period of ten years. Our firearms are used in our practices of our traditions for hunting and providing for our families. We must practice and store them as safely as we can.
